About this session

Explosive plots are usually associated with genre or popular fiction rather than literary fiction. In this discussion, Melanie and Laura will talk about what readers, agents, and editors are looking for when it comes to plot. We’ll talk about marketability, but also how to write a beautifully crafted narrative while still making readers turn pages.

Melanie Abrams

Melanie Abrams is the author of the novels Playing and Meadowlark. She teaches writing at the University of California, Berkeley and is also a developmental editor and photographer. She lives in Oakland, California.

Laura Mazer

Laura Mazer is a literary agent representing adult nonfiction. Particular interests include narrative, prescriptive, and gift nonfiction; progressive thought leadership; history and biography; popular science; irreverent self-help; popular culture; and women's interest. She is also an accomplished developmental editor with more than fifteen years of experience shaping books for Big Five and indie publishers, including Hachette Book Group, Random House, and Counterpoint Press.
